SHADE equips professionals in the human trafficking field with specialized training and practical resources. Our subject matter experts facilitate both in-person and virtual sessions, alongside essential toolkits for effective service delivery.

Our training is rooted in a survivor-centered, trauma-informed framework that champions the safety, needs, and dignity of survivors.

Announcement 

S.H.A.D.E. offers an annual intensive 40-hour Human Trafficking Advocacy (HTA) Certification training, providing participants with the comprehensive knowledge and practical skills necessary for impactful advocacy and survivor support.

 

Expert-Led Curriculum

Developed by survivors, this training is designed to enhance human trafficking responses, encourage cross-sector collaboration, and cultivate leadership in victim identification and deeper service connection. Instruction is facilitated by S.H.A.D.E. experts alongside local partners, making it suitable for law enforcement, behavioral healthcare professionals, community members, and volunteers.

 

Learning Methods & Legal Compliance

The training utilizes a dynamic mix of instructor-led sessions, group discussions, and breakout activities where participants practice vital support skills. 

Notably, this curriculum satisfies California Evidence Code 1038.2(b); however, the Human Trafficking Case Worker privilege requires employment with a qualified agency/organization.

The educational curriculum covers a broad range of subjects, including:

  • The historical context of human trafficking

  • Legal frameworks in civil and criminal law

  • Trauma-informed care practices

  • Counseling methods and crisis intervention

  • Overlaps between human trafficking and related criminal activities

  • Case management and advocacy services

  • The importance of survivor leadership

Program Logistics

The Human Trafficking Advocacy (HTA) Certification training commences on Sep 22, 2026 and concludes on Nov 12, 2026 (6 weeks)

Schedule

ZOOM Sessions are held every Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The curriculum also includes one mandatory in-person Saturday session. To earn the final certificate, participants must attend every session and be at least 16 years of age.

If you are 16 or 17 years old you must have parental permission to attend the  training.  

Enrollment and Certification Application

Please note that submitting an application does not guarantee a spot in the training. Each applicant will undergo an interview with S.H.A.D.E. staff as part of the admission process. 

Investment and Fees

  • Training Rate: $200 

  • Training w/Live Scan from employer: $150

  • Professional Development: $300 (standard full-price tuition).

  • Fellow Survivors: Scholarships are available 

 

All fees are non-refundable and tax-deductible. These costs directly support the provision of our trainers, professional guest speakers, comprehensive presentations, and all required training materials.
